The Portage River Lighthouse at sunset on the Keweenaw shore

KEWEENAW

Portage River

Stones from the Lake Superior shore, cut and set at the Portage River Lighthouse.

The lighthouse stands on the Lake Superior shore at Jacobsville, on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. I'm restoring it, and this collection is made there.

I pick each stone off the beach, then cut and polish it by hand. The shapes come from the place too: the Fresnel lens, the North Star, the compass, and the lines a storm leaves on the water. Every piece names the shore its stone came from.

Stones and metals

  • Lake Superior agate

  • Jasper

  • Greenstone, Michigan's state gem

  • Datolite

  • Set in sterling silver or copper

The first Portage River pieces are on the bench now. Join the list to see them first.
