Make It by Hand at the Lighthouse
One-day jewelry and lapidary classes with Susan Harbourt. Lake Superior stones, copper and silver, and a workshop at the Portage River Lighthouse.
Some classes meet in person, at the lighthouse and in other towns. Online classes come later, through a members' community you can join from home.
The Classes
Cut and Polish a Lake Superior Stone
Pick a stone from the Lake Superior shore. Learn to trim it on a saw, shape it on grinding wheels, and polish it into a cabochon (a smooth stone with a domed top and flat back). You leave with a finished stone ready to set.
$150. One day.
Set Your Stone
Build a silver bezel (the metal rim that holds a stone) and set a stone into a pendant you can wear home.
$190. One day. Stone options: bring your own stone, pick one of my cut stones (priced per stone), or take Cut and Polish first and set the stone you made: both classes for $300.
Stacking Rings
Make a set of hammered stacking rings in sterling silver or Keweenaw copper.
Copper Lighthouse Ornament
Cut, stamp, and finish a copper lighthouse ornament to hang or give.
Permanent Jewelry
Choose a chain and charms, and I weld it closed on your wrist or ankle. Price depends on the chain and charms you pick.
Beach Stone Earrings
Make a pair of earrings with stones from the Great Lakes shore.
Make and Take Night
An evening class. Make one simple piece start to finish. All materials included. No experience needed.
Private Party
Book a class for your group: a girls' trip, a birthday, or a bridal party. Pick the project, and I bring the workshop.
I'm Susan Harbourt. I cut Lake Superior stones and make jewelry at the Portage River Lighthouse on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula.
