Meet Susan
The Portage River Creative
Hello! I’m Susan Harbourt, engineer turned creative, author, jewelry artist, lighthouse keeper, and founder of the Portage River Collection. My journey has always been shaped by curiosity and a deep love for stories. Over time, that has grown into an umbrella of creative ventures that celebrate history, artistry, and transformation.
At the heart of Portage River is the lighthouse I am restoring in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. This historic place is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of resilience, light, and the many lives it has touched. Alongside the lighthouse, I launched Portage River Press to share books that inspire, entertain, and empower, from cozy mysteries and romances to children’s adventures.
As an award-winning jewelry designer, I create one-of-a-kind pieces under Portage River Designs, drawing inspiration from nature, travel, and heritage. Through Portage River Creative, I host workshops and coaching sessions that encourage others to embrace their own creativity and navigate midlife transformations. My passion is helping women discover what’s possible when they give themselves permission to dream again.
Whether it’s through storytelling, artistry, or personal connection, my mission is to bring light, beauty, and inspiration into the world and invite others to do the same.
