About Susan

I'm Susan Harbourt. I spent my first career as an engineer. Now I cut stone and make jewelry at the Portage River Lighthouse on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, the lighthouse I'm restoring.

Most of my stones come off the Lake Superior beach. The Peconic pieces start with beach stones from the North Fork and South Fork of Long Island. I shape and polish each one by hand and set it in silver or copper.

I also teach. Classes at the lighthouse and the Lighthouse Charm Club, one handmade charm a month, are both taking names now.
